Kumkumadi Elixir
Ayurvedic Face Oil · 15 ml
Most "Kumkumadi oils" on shelves today are a base oil with saffron colouring and fragrance added for effect — three or four ingredients standing in for thirty.
This one follows the classical Ashtanga Hridaya formulation unchanged: over 30 botanicals reduced into a decoction, then slow-simmered into sesame oil and goat's milk for close to a week. It's built for the kind of dullness that outlasts a breakout by months and the fine lines that show up first under bad lighting.
Formulated by Sheetal Panjwani over two decades of small-batch Ayurvedic practice.
How it's made
- Over 30 botanicals reduced into a concentrated decoction before the oil-making even begins
- Simmered into sesame oil and goat's milk using the Sneha Paka method — a slow-heat process that takes close to a week
- Kashmiri saffron added last, off heat, so its compounds aren't degraded by prolonged cooking
- Filtered through muslin by hand, in small batches
What's inside
- Kesar (Kashmiri saffron) — studied for its effect on the skin's melanin-producing enzyme, tyrosinase
- Chandan (sandalwood) — contains santalol compounds studied for calming inflamed skin; used traditionally to cool and soothe
- Manjistha — a root regarded in Ayurveda as a blood purifier, studied for its effect on pigment-producing enzymes
- Lotus — antioxidant flavonoids studied for protecting skin cells against everyday environmental stress
- Licorice root — contains glabridin, one of the more researched plant compounds for its effect on melanin production
- Sesame oil and goat's milk — the base the decoction is simmered into, chosen for how well it carries herb-soluble compounds into skin
How it feels
- Rich, slightly thick oil with a warm, earthy saffron scent — not floral, not sweet
- Sits on skin for a minute before sinking in; best worked in with warm palms
- Leaves a soft sheen rather than a matte finish, so it's built for night use
What to expect
- Skin usually feels softer and less dry within the first week
- Evenness of tone and softening of old marks takes longer — most people notice a difference around 6–8 weeks of nightly use
- Fine lines and deeper pigmentation shift slowest, if at all; this is a support routine, not a peel
How to use
- Warm 3–4 drops between your palms and press into clean, dry skin at night
- Use before your night cream, not instead of it
- Focus on areas of pigmentation or fine lines; a small amount goes a long way
- Use nightly for at least 6–8 weeks before judging results
Good to know
- No mineral oil, parabens, or synthetic fragrance
- Best suited to normal, dry, or combination skin; very oily or active-acne skin may find it heavy
- Store away from direct sunlight and heat; use within the stated shelf life
Patch test before first use. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
